History of the $2 bill
The $2 bill has been in circulation since 1862, with six different types created over the years, according to Treasury Department.
“For most of their history, $2 bills were not very popular, as they were viewed as unlucky or simply inappropriate for use in monetary exchanges.” State Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
In the 1860s, there were limits to the number of $1 and $2 bills that banks could issue due to concerns “that the widespread use of small denomination notes might cause inflation.”
However, the BEP adds that the bill’s fortunes changed when the United States entered World War II.
“In early 1942, the Treasury Department banned the carrying of U.S. currency across the Mexico-US border. The Treasury did so ‘to prevent the use of Mexico as a place where Axis agents could dispose of looted dollar currency abroad.’” states the site. “The only exception to this blockade is paper money.” $2 notes and silver dollars, as it was thought that there were not many of these items outside the United States. As a result, demand for $2 bills has increased along the border.”
Those designed before 1928 were larger and featured a number of different designs, but since 1928, bills have included a uniform image of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse.
There are still some subtle differences, such as one produced between 1928 and 1976 that has a small image of Jefferson’s House on the back, which was later replaced in 1976 with a depiction of a display of the Declaration of Independence.
