Report: Porsche SE Supervisory Board Tries to Save Russia’s Auto Industry and Implicate Putin

One of the most powerful representatives of the European auto industry plans to save Russia’s crippled car production. Siegfried Wolff, a member of the supervisory board of multibillion-dollar Porsche SE, “Spiegel”-Information about trying to buy the factory from Volkswagen in Russia. His goal: to build 270,000 cars in the country every year. He wrote this to Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the news.

He spoke affectionately with two names. He began the letter in January with “Dear Vladimir Vladimirovich.” He is asking Putin for 60 billion rubles, the equivalent of about 800 million euros. Wolf prefers to use the money to set up an investment plan. He plans to work with the Russian car manufacturer Gaz. He was also a member of the supervisory board of its companies until the end of 2022. Today he holds a 10 percent stake.
He wants to use for his project two factories that were closed after Moscow’s attack on Ukraine. This includes the plant in Kaluga, near Moscow, which is currently owned by Volkswagen.

VW didn’t sell to Wolf
However, the German group did not want to sell to Wolf. In March he decided to move to the factory Avilan car dealership group. A few days later, a court seized VW’s assets in Russia. This is the request of the gas group.
On the other hand, Wolf has already reached an agreement with automotive supplier Schaeffler. Here too the car king sits on the supervisory board. According to “Spiegel”, the German company sold its Russian business to its company: Prom Avto Konsalt in December. Wolf is waiting for approval from Moscow.
Putin was impressed by Wolff’s idea
Putin responded very enthusiastically to Wolff’s plans. “Given the situation in the auto industry, we can support this idea,” quotes “Spiegel” from notes the Kremlin leader allegedly made in the letter. “We are asking for processing and reporting,” is his demand from the government.

The Russian president’s help comes at the right time. Western sanctions and public pressure have forced many automakers out of the country. Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Renault abandoned their businesses in Russia – and in some cases sold them for a ruble.
