Deportation for those without a right to stay, immigration for skilled workers: this is the aim of the new migration deals that the federal special representative is negotiating with six countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America.
The federal government’s special representative, Joachim Stamp, appointed to conclude migration agreements, is holding secret discussions with several countries – the dpa news agency of the federal interior ministry reported. Georgia, Moldova, Kenya, Colombia, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan were specifically mentioned.
However, only a small fraction of those who applied for asylum in Germany this year came from these countries: by August, 12,000 out of a total of more than 220,000 asylum seekers. The first migration agreement with India was signed in December last year.
Such agreements aim to oblige treaty-bound countries to return rejected asylum seekers. At the same time, they must allow people to come to Germany legally. The traffic light government sees the agreements as key to channeling unregulated immigration into orderly channels.
