Frank Reich: I have a vision at QB, but the Colts tenure taught me how to adapt

When Frank Reich began his tenure as head coach of the Colts in 2018, the team had Andrew Luck at quarterback and the plan was for that to remain the case for years to come.

However, it didn’t take long for that plan to change. Luck retired after Reich’s first season at Indianapolis and spent the rest of his time with the team chasing down the starters who would be his long-term answer at the position. However, the Colts didn’t find one, and Reich was fired midway through the 2022 season.

Reich is now the head coach of the Panthers and there is no plan in place for the quarterback this time around. The Panthers used three starters on their way to a 7-10 record and Reich said he knew he had to come with a “vision” of what the team would do in a critical position. He also knows he may have to change that vision due to unforeseen circumstances and he believes his time with the Colts prepares him for that.

“I had to work with the young, the old, the pocket passer-by, The man who movesReich said via Darren Gant of the team’s website. “And I think even though it wasn’t always an ideal scenario, like in Indy having a different midfielder every year, you’ve learned a lot through it because you’re forced to adapt and develop your attack around different styles of midfielders. So I think that bodes well. I’m always learning and developing as a coach; I’m able to better explain how things can change, depending on the style of the midfielder we have.”

Reich noted that there has been a move “more to the quarterback-type movement” in recent seasons, but he also knows “we have to be good out of the pocket.” Choosing someone who can handle these responsibilities will go a long way in determining where things go for Reich in the Carolinas.
