DENVER (AP) — Nine people were injured in a mass shooting early Tuesday in downtown Denver as basketball fans celebrated the Nuggets’ first NBA title win.the police said. A wounded suspect was arrested.
Investigators believe multiple shots were fired in a dispute between several people about a mile away from Ball Arena, where the Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat on Monday night.
The Denver Police Department said the shooting occurred around 12:30 a.m. — about 3 1/2 hours into the game — and three of the injured were in critical condition. a permit. The suspect, a man, was one of seven people with injuries believed not to be life-threatening.
“As to what led up to this altercation that led to the shooting, that is still under investigation at this time,” said police spokesman Doug Shipman. A press conference was scheduled for 11:30 am
“It happened in the area where we had the largest gathering of people partying during the night,” he said, but the crowd “dwindled a little bit at that point.”
The shooting took place in the LoDo area of downtown Denver, which is known for its restaurants and nightlife. Shipman said a lot of people probably walked out of the pubs after the game.
Yellow police tape sealed off the area on Tuesday night as investigators roamed the venue, which was strewn with evidence signs and what appeared to be leftovers from the festivities, including an e-scooter and a rented green bike.
Police were interviewing witnesses and Shipman described the ongoing investigation as “extensive”.
Spokeswoman Heather Burke said eight people were hospitalized at Denver Health Medical Center – one in critical condition, one in good condition and six in good condition. She said questions about the two additional wounded should be directed to the police.
