Good morning. It's January 15, and today's photo comes to us from Playa Grande, Mexico.
I realize some readers may get tired of seeing the Milky Way, but not me! I love images of our galaxy so they are regularly featured in the daily telescope. However, this image is truly special, because it highlights not only the sky above, but a wonder here on Earth.
Alfonso Tames sent me this photo, and I can't get enough of it. The image shows our galaxy, part of the Orion Nebula in the sky, and ocean bioluminescence, which is light emitted by marine life in the sea. One of the most amazing nights I've ever had was kayaking in a bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico, a strange and eerie experience.
It's fun to consider all the life forms shown in this image, both what's known to be out there in the ocean and what might be lurking around all those stars above. Have a great week everyone.
