Rock legend Carlos Santana collapsed during a concert Tuesday night at Clarkston’s Pine Knob Musical Theater when he was overpowered by heat, his Facebook management team announced early Wednesday morning.
The 74-year-old musician was singing “Joy” before suddenly stopping, according to party-goers who said the music stopped abruptly.
“He was walking and playing and suddenly fell,” said Janet Brown of St Clair Shores, who was attending her fourth party in Santana and celebrating her birthday.
The lights dimmed, then venue officials announced that Santana would not be returning to the stage.
The Santana team posted on Santana’s Facebook page early Wednesday that it was “exaggerated due to heat exhaustion and dehydration.” The publication, citing Santana manager Michael Freones, said he had been taken to the McLaren Clarkston emergency room for observation.
The publication said Wednesday’s show will be postponed.
Santana commented on the page saying “Everyone. Thank you for your precious prayers. My cin and I’m fine just to take it easy. I forgot to eat and drink water so I got dehydrated and passed out. Blessings and miracles for all of you…”
The episode was shaky for concertgoers like Detroit’s Tanisha Ruffy, who were watching Santana perform for the first time.
“It’s very annoying,” she said. “There aren’t a lot of people who performed at Woodstock with us today.”
“You just want to see him perform and everything to finish things off well and you don’t have a situation like that,” said John Collins, who was on the lawn for the concert.
Santana appeared on Tuesday with Earth, Wind & Fire as part of a “Supernatural Tour.”
Pine Knob representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Dozens of attendees took to Twitter to express their concerns.
“Everyone is leaving. God bless and watch Carlos Santana. We need him!” One user said.
Last year, Santana said he had successfully undergone heart surgery and canceled several Las Vegas shows planned for December, the Associated Press reported.
He turns 75 this month and has won 10 Grammy Awards, including 1999 Album of the Year “Supernatural.”
