Ellsberg released the so-called Pentagon Papers in the early 1970s, publicizing the US government’s secret plans for the Vietnam War. He was charged with espionage and faced up to 115 years in prison. His trial ended in 1973 and all charges against him were dropped. He has received many awards for his exposure.

A warning about the dangers of nuclear war

The military analyst, author and peace activist had told friends and supporters in March this year that he had pancreatic cancer and had refused chemotherapy. Ellsberg’s family has now announced that he died Friday morning in California with his family by his side.

More recently, Ellsberg has repeatedly emphasized the dangers of nuclear war. The family said he was touched by the love and appreciation he showed in his final days. He is said to have joked towards the end of his life, “If I had known this was how I would die, I would have done it sooner.”
