BALTIMORE — Cardinals outfielder Adam Wainwright will perform on a very different stage before bidding farewell to St. Louis fans and life on the baseball diamond.

Wainwright will give a postgame concert during his final weekend at Busch Stadium. The 42-year-old will retire from baseball after this season, but not before treating fans to three original songs from his upcoming country album.

It is scheduled to premiere on September 30, the second to last day of the season.

“I’m excited to share some music with everyone, and I hope they like it,” Wainwright said Wednesday before the Cardinals took on the Baltimore Orioles. “It’s an exciting opportunity for me.”

Wainwright won his 199th career game Tuesday night. The right-hander was also part of the World Series team. He was named an All-Star three times and won two Gold Gloves.

This won’t be his first musical stint at Cardinals Stadium. He performed the national anthem before the team’s home opener of the year.

“I think he’s more confident on the mound,” manager Oliver Marmol said. “Once he gets going, he’s in good shape. But he’s been pitching a little longer.”

For Wainwright, performing this national anthem was the musical equivalent of facing a baseball player with the bases loaded.

“The national anthem was under a lot of pressure,” Wainwright said. “If I mess up my own song, I can manage and no one will know because I haven’t released the album yet.”

Marmol said Wainwright gave him samples of his music, sometimes when the manager least expected it.

“Whenever he comes out with a new song, he usually sends it to me, and it’s usually around midnight,” Marmol said. “I actually went to see him play. I enjoyed it. It’s going to be fun.”

Wainwright’s teammates can’t wait.

“He’s a really good guitar player,” reliever Matthew Liberatore said. “It’s mostly country, which is what I like. So I’m looking forward to hearing it.”

The concert will enable the audience to listen to part of Wainwright’s upcoming album, which will contain 15 songs.

“I will be posting some teasers on social media until the album is released,” he said. “This is a more in-depth look at who we’re all about. They’re all songs about me and my upbringing.”

After he finishes baseball, playing music will occupy most of Wainwright’s time. But that’s only part of his plan to stay busy.

“It will be one of the chapters,” he said. “I have a lot of chapters in the book – five kids and a wife. I’ll be doing some streaming too, but that will definitely be part of it.”
