A Baldur's Gate 3 player accidentally kills Death

Noel Corbett

One player shocked the Baldur's Gate 3 community by doing something that should have been impossible: killing Withers.

One of the prominent characters in Baldur's Gate 3 is Withers.

The mysterious and powerful skeleton is a great aid on your journey, allowing you to respect your character, recruit tenants, and resurrect dead companions. As of Patch 5, he has also put together an Epilogue Party, allowing players to have a final reunion with their comrades.

One important fact about Withers that sets him apart from other NPCs is that he cannot be killed. Based on the knowledge you can discover about him during the game, there is a good reason for his invulnerability. However, one Baldur's Gate 3 player managed to do just that.

The Baldur's Gate 3 player accidentally kills Withers using Gale

As a reddit user Kapil sharedIt is indeed possible to kill Withers even though it should be impossible.

The player found this after using “Ability Drain” of massive power to reduce his Intelligence. Reducing any stats to zero gives the target the Atrophy condition, resulting in instant death.

After a long rest, Withers becomes lootable, causing the player to say, “I guess he's not coming back.”

For those who don't know, Withers is actually Jergal, the master of the end of all things and former god of death. This explains why his power in resurrection magic surpasses even powerful clerics.

With that in mind, the fact that the player managed to kill him is pretty shocking and likely an oversight. After all, Larian probably didn't expect anyone to actually use Ability Drain to atrophy Withers to death.

Given Withers' role in Baldur's Gate 3's story and ending, his death could have serious – perhaps game-breaking – consequences.

Fortunately for those curious, the player chose not to reload an old save and instead see how the game would play without them, so hopefully they'll share an update on how the rest of the run will go without Weathers.
