Why was the “Bayesian” boat off Sicily during the storm? Why can’t she act? Jörg Kachelmann talks about “indifference”.

PALERMO – “We didn’t see that coming,” was the only sentence so far from “Basian” captain James Catfield. After the tragic boat accident off Sicily, one question in particular arises: how the sailing ship was surprised by the hurricane. It is not clear why it anchored half a nautical mile off the coast during the storm.

“Basian” boat sinks in Sicily in minutes – Casselman is firm: “No one was surprised”

The video shows how quickly Bayesian sank when the storm hit. The boat sank within 120 seconds. “It all happened very quickly,” said German captain Carsten Barner. He was in the immediate vicinity of the “Sir Robert Baden-Powell” and saved 15 survivors from the drowning.

Were the crew and passengers on the luxury yacht sleeping when they were shaken by the storm? Meteorologist Jörg Casselmann doesn’t want to be satisfied with this explanation. “No, of course no one slept, no, nothing surprising,” writes the meteorologist X (Twitter).

Casselman talks about “negligence” – and compares the boat accident in Sicily to the accident on the Costa Concordia.

Why Casselman didn’t prepare for the “Bayesian” storm is inexplicable. “All the computer models are predicting strong thunderstorms around Porticello on Sunday (August 18, TR),” he explains. And complains: “The degree of negligence in which the vessel was is of skete-like dimensions.”

“Schettinsque dimensions,” Kachelmann apparently refers to Francesco Schettino. The captain was blamed for the Costa Concordia disaster in 2012. He became known as “Captain Coward” because he was one of the first to leave a cruise ship after it hit a rock while in charge. A total of 32 people died and Schettino was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Weather Data Shows Storms Over Palermo – Could “Bayesian” Crews Have Reacted Before Hurricanes?

Even if the crew “refuses” to look at weather forecasts, they may have woken up long before the storm, Casselman suspects. According to weather data, it first broke around 2:45 a.m Thunderstorms in Palermo go “There is still enough time to do everything for the disaster that will undoubtedly happen,” the meteorologist said.

Some media reports claim that “Basian” was unable to release the announcers on time. This has dangerous effects on storms. So is the place near the shore. “On the open sea, a ship will generally endure more extreme weather conditions than closer to land, where waves break in shallow water and endanger the ship,” says boat builder John Maas. He does. at IPPEN.MEDIA Deep-sea expert Philipp Ebelbaum explains that the “Basian” sank in two minutes, possibly caused by a large wave that washed a large amount of water overboard.

Why did the boat sink in Sicily? “A lawyer who knows negligent homicide very well,” Casselman believes.

For Kachelmann, it is not enough to talk about a storm disaster in Sicily. He warned: “We hope that a public prosecutor who is familiar with negligent homicide and will help ensure that such an incident does not happen again. This should never have happened. “At least one person died and six others are missing. Including British tech billionaire Mike Lynch. (mo)
