The 2024 Major League Baseball postseason is currently underway, with the Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres advancing to the playoffs. The Tigers took down the Houston Astros on Wednesday, while the Royals took down the Baltimore Orioles, with both AL Central underdogs winning a best-of-three series on the road. The Tigers advance to ALDS action against the Cleveland Guardians, their AL Central rival. The Royals will face Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and the New York Yankees in the next round. The Astros saw their streak of seven straight ALCS appearances end, while the Orioles are now 0-5 in the playoffs in the last two seasons.
In the National League, the Padres took care of business and swept the Braves to secure their NLDS berth, where they would play the Dodgers. Meanwhile, the Brewers beat the Mets on Wednesday to force a do-or-die Game 3.
Four teams – the top two teams in each league – earned first-round picks. The New York Yankees, Cleveland Guardians, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Philadelphia Phillies have all reached the Major League Series.
The Mets and Braves clinched the final two postseason spots on Monday, leaving the Arizona Diamondbacks out of the playoff picture. The Mets won the first wild game of a crucial doubleheader in Atlanta to book their spot. The Braves regrouped and won the second game to become the twelfth and final team.
The Braves, Mets, and D-backs all finished with 89-73 records. The Braves took the tiebreaker against both teams and will be the No. 5 seed in the bracket. The Mets won the tiebreaker against Arizona and are the No. 6 seed.
All Wild Card Series are hosted by the top classifications and will conclude by Thursday, October 3. The LDS tour begins on Saturday, October 5. The league championship series begins on Sunday, October 13. The World Championship will start either on Tuesday, October 22nd or Friday, October 25th.
