Temperatures are rising around the world – and Germany will also suffer from significant climate changes. US researchers use a simulation to show how drastic the growth could be if emissions continue to rise.

In the future, Berlin may feel like Italy’s Emilia Romagna – and Miami like Saudi Arabia: an interactive map shows the city or region whose current climate is most similar to the expected future climate of your place of residence. The app, called “Future Urban Climates”, was developed by environmental researcher Matthew Fitzpatrick from the University of Maryland in the US.

die The map shows, as the climate crisis progresses, by 2080 temperature and humidity may approach values currently typical for regions near the equator. Data from more than 40,500 cities and more than 5,000 metros are included, as reported by the university.

Accordingly, the climate in Scandinavian cities such as Stockholm and Oslo will be similar to that in Croatia in the future. In 2080, residents of London could experience a climate similar to that currently found in the municipality of Laparte, near Bordeaux.

Different scenes

“In 50 years, cities in the northern hemisphere will look like cities in the south,” Fitzpatrick said. However, there is currently no place in the world that represents what the climate in equatorial regions like Central America, South Florida, and North Africa will be like in the future.

For the calculations, Fitzpatrick used the statistical method of Climate Analogy and data from the Climate Council IPCC. In the standard setting, the utility assumes a trend of higher emissions that would warm the planet by about nine degrees by the end of this century. This map shows the results of reduced emissions: if the planet warms by about three degrees by the end of the century, Berlin should feel like the municipality of Böhl-Iggelheim in Rhineland-Palatinate now.
