As for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, they came very close to winning the Premier League title for the second time in three years, but Manchester City overtook them on the last day. But there is renewed optimism around Anfield that he could be crowned champions again.

A few minutes to go here. Can Fulham hold out?

Goal! Mohamed Salah is equivalent to Liverpool. Tim Ream missed Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross and the ball rebounded to Salah, who hits the ball into the net. What a game!

Fabio Carvalho, the youngster who joined Liverpool from Fulham this summer, is working harder. Cue relief among fans at home.

Goal! Fulham leads 2-1. Mitrovic hit the penalty kick in the net after a clear mistake by Virgil van Dijk. Incredible views here at Craven Cottage. Fulham fans in the land of dreams.

Penalty for Fulham!

Goal! Darwin Nunez with a bold flick enters via a swerve after a great job by Mohamed Salah, lower right. Liverpool draw. Play well and for real here at Craven Cottage.

close! Salah hits the ball through Darwin Nunez, but he is saved by his back heel. Fulham fans sat behind me: “This can’t go on!” Is it possible, though? Liverpool is very disappointed.

Mail! How did that not happen!? USMNTTim Ream brilliantly recovers the ball and rushes forward, then a Neskens Kebanu shot overwhelms Alisson but hits the post and bounces off. Very close to second place for Fulham.

A quiet start to our second half here at Craven Cottage. Fulham is sitting a little deeper and Liverpool are trying to come out from behind.

Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott both came early in the second half for Liverpool. Thiago is walking slowly due to an injury.

half time: Fulham 1-0 Liverpool – Mitrovic’s header difference as Fulham really shook Liverpool here. The Reds have come close on a few occasions, but Fulham totally deserve the lead with new signings for Pereira and Ballinha in particular.

Mail! Luis Diaz hits the post with a beautiful effort as he almost slipped from an impossible angle. Liverpool is very close to a draw.

It should be 1-1. Andy Robertson was found at the back post and his ball crossed the goal by the rushing Liverpool players. Very good game, this one.

GOALLLL! That was coming. Aleksandar Mitrovic heads into the net at the back post as he leaps over Trent Alexander-Arnold to net. Fulham fully deserves this lead. They have been excellent so far. Home lovers have gone crazy here at Craven Cottage!

Bloc! Robertson saved Harrison Reed’s shot well and Mitrovic almost got a cross finish. Fulham has a real chance here. Liverpool hasn’t even started yet.

We have to say that Fulham fans are ‘dissatisfied with the referee’ in this first half. Joel Matip got away with some questionable interference. The hosts still keep to themselves.

close! Fulham’s Pereira kicked Tim Ream’s header free kick wide, then Joao Balenha’s effort veered wide. Very nice pressure from the hosts.

Luis Diaz stuck the ball to the back of the net with a fine finishing touch…but Andy Robertson was offside initially. Decent finish from Diaz, much better than Liverpool.

Fulham has a real chance here. Antonee Robinson flies down the left wing at every opportunity. Liverpool seems a little upset. Home lovers love it.

Starting: A very good chance for Fulham right away! The Alexander-Arnold elimination falls right on Mitrovic and he takes a few touches, then makes an effort out of sight. Mitro seemed a little unsure whether he would hit that or not.

Work teams here, loud here in the shack and we’re all ready. Let’s go.

Hello and welcome to Craven Cottage! It’s a beautiful day here on the banks of the Thames. What a great place to start the first Saturday of the new season.

Key storylines

For Fulham, it’s been a wild ride over the past five seasons with two relegations and three promotions to the Premier League. Life at Craven Cottage is anything but boring. All their hopes are once again pinned on Aleksandar Mitrovic as the Serbian goal machine (at least in the second tier) will be punctuated with crosses and the hope is that he can finally become prolific in the Premier League. Marco Silva has been upfront about Fulham not making many signings this summer, and staying in place would be a huge achievement. Silva loves the counterattack and needs a good start to the season to build positive vibes. Sidenote: Fulhammerica is still going strong with Tim Ream and Anthony Robinson playing key roles this season.

Liverpool have had a good and calm overall performance. They sold Sadio Mane early in the summer but replaced him with signing club record holder Darwin Nunez who looks set to be the next attacking star at Anfield. And yes, they managed to sign Mohamed Salah to a new long-term contract as well. Klopp’s side have had some strange results in pre-season, but they are preparing well for the new campaign and the big questions revolve around how Nunez, Diaz and Salah come together as the front three, as well as how much gas the likes of Jordan Henderson are. Thiago Alcantara left in the tank to lead another push to win the four cups.
