Wagenknecht favors negotiations with Russia

Left-wing politician Sahra Wagenknecht characterizes the suspension of the last major nuclear disarmament deal announced by Russia as scary and dangerous – but believes that talks with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin about ending the war in Ukraine are realistic.

“We are moving into a world where more and more weapons are being developed,” he said on the ZDF program “Marcus Lance” on Tuesday with the aim of Putin’s national address. In it he announced that he would temporarily abandon the “New Start” arms reduction treaty with the United States.

According to Wagenknecht, Putin made a “war speech.” The politician characterizes the increasing number of weapons as “incredibly dangerous”. But US President Joe Biden’s latest signals are “dangerous”.

I find the signals Biden sent on his trip alarming.

According to Wagenknecht, Biden is “still only going the military route.” The US president wants more weapons and there is no diplomatic initiative or offer from Biden.

“So it swings more and more to both sides,” the politician said. But this world full of nuclear weapons cannot afford it.

Wagenknecht said one could plead for negotiations without recognizing a Russian war of aggression. The West has a responsibility to press for talks.

However, in a speech he delivered shortly before the first anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine, Putin signaled his unwillingness to negotiate.

Instead, a “neo-Nazi regime” is in power in Ukraine, he reiterated, and it must be replaced. The war, which Moscow calls a “special military operation,” will continue. He also blamed the West for the war.

The government in Kiev rejected talks with Putin by decree in September – Moscow previously only partially controlled the Ukrainian regions of Kherson, Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Luhansk by Russian troops.

With the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea annexed in 2014, one-fifth of Ukraine remains under Russian control.

In the middle of the month, Wagenknecht published a “Manifesto for Peace” together with feminist Alice Schwarzer, which was met with much criticism.
