Using night mode on your phone can help you take photos of the northern lights. Here’s how to play it.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (KDKA) – The northern lights are expected to appear again across the United States on Friday evening.

When the northern lights or aurora borealis are visible, the best way to see them is to find a dark spot away from bright lights, allow time for your eyes to adjust to the darkness and look north.

Here’s how to use Night mode on your phone’s camera to try to capture pictures of the colorful aurora borealis.

How do I turn on Night Mode on iPhone?

If you’re using an iPhone, Apple says the default settings will be there Night mode turns on automatically “when the camera detects a low-light environment.”

When Night Mode is active, the icon will turn yellow in the upper-left corner of your screen.

A number will appear next to this icon telling you how long it will take to take the photo.

You can adjust how long the exposure will last by tapping the arrow that appears at the top of the viewfinder.

How do I turn on night mode on my Android phone?

Starting night mode on your Android device depends on the type of device you have.

On a Samsung Galaxy deviceThe yellow moon icon will appear at the bottom right of the screen. On a Pixel deviceyou can tap Night Light, then tap Capture and hold your phone steady for a few seconds. In the Google Camera appYou can turn on Night Mode by tapping on Settings and turning the mode on or off.
