Democratic US Congressman Adam Schiff has called on Joe Biden to drop his presidential bid. He believes it’s time for Biden to “pass the torch,” Schiff wrote in a statementLos Angeles Times Quoted. By backing down, Biden will do so Democrats Can defeat Republican candidate Donald Trump. Biden’s legacy as a political leader will be preserved.

Schiff praised Biden’s legacy, but said “our country is at a crossroads.” A second Trump presidency would “undermine the foundations” of democracy, and he has serious concerns about Biden. Trump Schiff wrote that it could be defeated.

Nearly 20 Democratic members of Congress have so far publicly called on Biden to step aside in favor of another candidate. Schiff is by far the most prominent of them. He was the lead attorney in the impeachment trial against Trump.

Many leading Democrats are pushing to formally nominate Biden for the presidential nomination before the party’s convention in August. Schiff also wrote in his statement that the Democratic Party fully supports whoever is at the top — even if it’s Biden.

At the same time, Biden’s support among the party leadership appears to be waning. Democratic US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer suggested ending Biden’s re-election campaign at a meeting on Saturday, according to a media report. US broadcaster ABC News reported that Schumer, 81, said his decision not to seek re-election was good for the country and the Democratic Party. This has not been officially confirmed. Neither the US president’s office nor Schumer’s office would comment on the report.

A majority of Democrats lack confidence in Biden’s abilities

Two-thirds of Democrats support Biden stepping down, according to a poll conducted by the National Opinion Research Center and the Associated Press. Only 30 percent are very confident that the 81-year-old has the mental capacity to be effective as president.

Overall, seven in ten Americans believe Biden should drop his candidacy, according to the poll. So Democrats are slightly less likely to hold this view than Republicans and Independents.

Biden’s candidacy has long been controversial because of his age. After a failed televised debate against Trump, in which Biden stuttered several times, failed to finish sentences and appeared tired and fatigued, many prominent Democrats called on Biden to drop his candidacy.
