United States: Detention of Republican Santos officials – Politics

Controversial New York U.S. Republican George Santos turned himself in to authorities and is now in custody. As reported by various American media Including The New York Times. It was initially known that Santos was being charged at the federal level. CNN News Channel first reported the news About it and quoted a person familiar with the matter.

At the time, it was unclear what the charges were. Meanwhile, U.S. media are reporting on various crimes Santos has apparently been accused of, including fraud, money laundering, theft and false statements.

The FBI and Justice Department prosecutors in New York and Washington were investigating allegations of misrepresentations in Santos’ campaign finance records. The 34-year-old was sworn in to Congress, although it was previously known that he had made up a lot of information on his CV – including information about his education and his origins. Elected to a district that includes parts of Long Island and the New York City borough of Queens, Santos has so far rejected calls from both Democrats and Republicans to step down.

Santos is being investigated for possible campaign finance violations. Also, the U.S. House of Representatives Ethics Committee set up a subcommittee in March to investigate his conduct.

Santos and his representatives reportedly did not respond to requests for comment. A spokeswoman for the Brooklyn U.S. attorney, the office prosecuting the case, declined to comment. According to a CNN report, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he would consider the allegations before deciding whether to remove Santos from Congress.
