Two workers killed, another seriously injured in accident at Delta Air Lines maintenance facility in Atlanta

Atlanta — Two workers were killed and another was seriously injured in an incident at Delta Air Lines’ maintenance and technical operations facility at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to Delta TechOps.

Details surrounding the Tuesday morning accident were not clear, but Delta Tech Ops said the incident occurred at its wheel and brake shop.

Delta said the incident involved a tire and components inside the tire. The wheel was not installed on or near the aircraft at the time of the incident, according to Delta.

“We offer our full support to their families during this difficult time and are conducting an investigation to determine what happened,” John Lafter, executive vice president, chief operating officer and president of Delta Tech Ops, said in a statement. “This news is devastating for all of us. [Employee assistance program] Resources will be available on site. [Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility] “To support our teams as long as they are needed.”

The incident had no impact on airport operations, according to airport officials.

Delta said it was “working with local authorities and conducting a full investigation to determine what happened.”

The airline added that it was “deeply saddened” and “thanks to the quick action of the rescuers and medical teams on the scene.”

“I offer my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the Delta employees who died,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said. “My thoughts are also with those who were injured, and I hope they make a speedy and full recovery.”

The mayor said police, fire and airport teams were at the scene.

Atlanta airport officials also offered their condolences.
