Foreign Minister Annalena Berbach took the opportunity at the G20 summit in India to directly confront Sergey Lavrov over the war in Ukraine.

NEW DELHI – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov left the group of foreign ministers at the G20 summit in July to avoid criticism of Russia’s war against Ukraine – a scandal that was rife. At the ongoing G20 summit in India, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbach used the round to address Lavrov directly: “You’d better be here in the listening room,” said the green politician — and called on his Russian counterparts to finish. The war in Ukraine was immediate.

Berbach addresses Lavrov directly: ‘Stop bombing Ukrainian cities’

“Stop this war. Stop violating our international order. Stop bombing Ukrainian cities and civilians. Not in a month or a year, but today,” Berbach addressed Lavrov directly. “Because every family that loses a father, a brother, a mother or a child loses a world.” The strong have no right to attack their smaller neighbors.

Apparently, the Russian side has also recognized that “false claims of not starting this war” are not working, Baerbach said, referring to Russia’s claim that NATO has started a war against Russia, “which is not a good strategy.” To go somewhere (…), get rid of your false stories and then leave,” Baerbach said, referring to Lavrov’s early departure in July.

Baerbock at G20 summit: “Nowhere in the world has war had positive consequences”

“Here at this G20 table, 19 countries have made it clear that they want to stop this war. They all finally want peace,” Baerbach emphasized. He acknowledged that there are different perspectives on the Ukraine conflict among G20 members. “But what unites us all is that there is not a single place in the world where the Russian war has a positive impact. It leads to more suffering, more misery, and sometimes more deaths.” Russia has also suffered from the effects of the war, with thousands of people fleeing Russia, as did the country’s economic data.

The German foreign minister has expressed concern that Russia wants to stop a “fresh start” deal to reduce nuclear weapons. Beyerbach urged Lavrov to resume dialogue with the United States and fully implement the agreement.

G20 summit: Joint declaration planned with Russia, China, US

Hosting the G20 is a delicate matter for India, which has not openly condemned the war in Ukraine. The host country, while sharing Western concerns about China, is a major customer of Russia’s defense sector and has increased oil imports from Russia.

On Thursday (March 2), Indian External Affairs Minister Subramaniam Jaishankar spoke loudly. CNN Meet his colleagues from the US, Russia and China. The hope is to find enough points of intersection for a joint declaration at the end of the summit. The plan failed at a meeting of G20 finance ministers in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru in January: Russia and China refused to sign a joint declaration criticizing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Speech at G20 Summit: Indian PM Modi calls for global tensions to be resolved

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for an end to differences on the Ukraine crisis during his pre-recorded opening speech on Thursday. “We are together at a time of deep global division. We all have our positions and perspectives on how to overcome these tensions,” he said. “The experiences of the last few years – financial crisis, climate change, pandemic, terrorism and war – clearly show that global governance has failed,” Modi warned. “We must all recognize that multilateralism is in crisis today.” (smu/dpa)
