When the 2024 schedule was released, many took note of Pittsburgh’s Week 2 trip to Denver because it provided a chance for quarterback Russell Wilson to face off against his former Broncos teammates.

But things went differently. Wilson missed his second straight game with a calf injury, and Justin Fields was the starting quarterback in the 13-6 win, which improved to 2-0 on the season.

Although Wilson was merely an observer in his return to Denver, his difficult two-year experience with the team and his release in the offseason were on the minds of head coach Mike Tomlin and the rest of the Steelers in the wake of the win.

“I think we all know Ross. I got kind of dirty. “He was a great player last year,” Fields said, via ESPN.com’s Brock Breyer. “So I know he wished he could have played today in this game, but it’s great for him to get the win. He got a little ball in the game.”

Wilson’s injury has derailed plans to start him this season, and it remains to be seen whether he will return to that position. Fields’ numbers weren’t impressive Sunday, and the Steelers failed to move the ball in the second half, but penalties played a role in those results, and the Steelers won both of their games despite scoring just 31 points. Those wins align with Wilson’s health as factors the team should consider when considering a change to the most important position on offense.
