Sonya Eddy is dead: ‘General Hospital’ star was 55

Eddie joined the long-running drama Hospital in 2006 as the blunt, no-nonsense nurse, and played the role for 543 episodes, appearing as recently as this past October. The character served as the head nurse, and was the mother of Stan Johnson (played by Keiko Ellsworth) who was killed off the show in 2007 following a mass injury. In real life, Eddie was also a licensed vocational nurse.

“She left an indelible mark on everyone she touched, through the screen and off,” Tyler Ford, her producing partner at Eddy Ford Entertainment, said in a statement.

Born in Concord, California, on June 17, 1967, she began her foray into acting in college, studying theater and dance at the University of California, Davis. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1992, but began her acting career with the Ruby Dee play “Zora Is My Name” in 1990. Additional stage credits include Eddie’s “The Comedy of Errors,” portraying The Witch in “Into the Woods.” by Stephen Sondheim and played Bloody Mary in South Pacific.

Her career in television includes roles on such shows as ‘Married… With Children’, ‘The Drew Carey Show’, ‘Murphy Brown’, ‘Seinfeld’, ‘Home Improvement’ and a recurring role on ‘Joan of Arcadia’. In addition to her permanent role as Epiphany Johnson on ‘General Hospital’, Eddie also played the character in the primetime spin-off series, ‘General Hospital: Night Shift’, and was elevated to a main cast member in the short-lived series.

“The world has lost another iconic angel,” Eddie’s friend and fellow actor Octavia Spencer wrote on Instagram. “Her legions of ‘General Hospital’ fans will miss her.”
