Sholes announces strengthening of NATO’s eastern part – more troops for Lithuania
President Scholes explains that Germany wants to increase its commitment to the eastern part of NATO in Lithuania. Pantesware should lead a war force there. At the same time, he rejects criticisms of arms supplies to Ukraine.
AIn view of the threat from Russia, President Olaf Scholes (SPD) said that Germany would strengthen the eastern part of NATO and lead a “war force” in the Baltic states. “We will protect every inch of NATO territory,” Scholes tweeted during a visit to Lithuania on Tuesday. “Germany will strengthen the eastern part of NATO and lead a strong military force in Lithuania for defense and defense.”
During his visit to Lithuania, Scholz, accompanied by local President Gitanas Nauseda, visited the German NATO Enhanced Forward Reserve (EFP) Group in Pabrade. Germany heads the Lithuanian-based multinational EFP war team. Scholz thanked the Bundeswehr members for their “hard work” in ensuring “security in Europe and NATO’s security.”
At a press conference, Scholz later backed Germany’s position on arms sales to Ukraine. “No one offers as much as Germany does,” the chancellor said Tuesday. There are a few other countries like the United States. However, Germany is one of the countries that has used its potential to the fullest. Scholes said Germany was one of Ukraine’s “most important military supporters.”
When asked by a journalist, Scholes described Germany’s reluctance to supply arms to Kiev as “false.” Among other things, Germany supplies armored troops carriers, motor rockets and ammunition. Germany will continue to supply arms to Ukraine “until needed” to defeat Ukraine’s “Russian occupation”.
Scholes reiterated the goal of the Transport Lighting Coalition to spend two percent of German economic output on security in the future. This would indicate that the Bundeswehr would have “the largest legacy army” among European NATO partners. In the event of an attack, “every centimeter of NATO territory will be protected,” Scholz insisted. Referring to the NATO battalion stationed in Lithuania, Scholes said Germany was ready to increase its involvement.
The Baltic states have long insisted that NATO forces be stationed in every three countries. A regiment typically has 3,000 to 5,000 soldiers. The German-led NATO battalion has 1,600 troops, more than 1,000 from the Bundeswehr. The German commitment must be built “in the direction of a strong war force.”
Germany has been criticized in the Baltic states for its Ukraine policy. In Vilnius, Scholes strongly supported his approach to the conflict, including his regular phone calls with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. It is important to tell the Russian president that neither Ukraine nor its allies will accept the “mandated peace,” Scholes insisted.
During his visit to Lithuania, Scholes also spoke about Spain’s potential plans to supply German tanks to Ukraine. Spain wants, according to a newspaper report “Country“Deliver German Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine. As a rule, the federal government must approve the export of such weapons, as the so-called end-use rules in procurement agreements provide for this during the transaction.
Providing the Leopard with 2 tanks would be a novelty
According to the Chancellor, Spain has not yet made a request for the export of 2 tanks of Leopard made in Germany to Ukraine. The SPD politician said during his visit to Lithuania that if there was another such application, it would be explored.
The distribution of Leopard 2 is the first time Ukraine has received modern Western tanks in the fight against the Russian military. In Germany, politicians from the ruling SPD have so far insisted that there is an informal agreement between NATO countries not to supply such weapons. According to the newspaper, about 40 of the 108 leopard tanks used by Spain in Germany in 1995 may be operational again.
