Zelenskyj praises the “strong results” of his army.

Ukrainian armed forces have been fighting Russian invaders for months. Time and time again, defenders win crucial counterattacks. President Selenskij praises the successful attacks – and thanks for arms supplies from the West.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has praised his armed forces for successful counterattacks, emphasizing the role of Western weapons. Over the past week, the Ukrainian military has achieved “strong results” in destroying Russian military equipment, Zelenskyy said in a video address overnight. “Any attack on the enemy’s ammunition depots, their command positions and the accumulation of Russian technology saves all our lives, the lives of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians.”

Selenskyj thanked Western allies for earlier arms deliveries. He specifically mentioned the United States, which announced a few days ago that it would provide $550 million worth of weapons to Ukraine. It should contain ammunition for the HIMARS multiple rocket launcher system and 75,000 artillery shells. At the same time Zelenskyy asked for more military assistance. Ukraine, which has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for nearly six months, wants to use foreign weapons to recapture lost territory. Recently, the Ukrainian military has launched several counter-offensives in the south.

However, in eastern Donetsk, defenders are under increasing pressure. Russian attacks in the direction of the towns of Sloviansk, Bakhmut and Avdiivka were repulsed, the Ukrainian General Staff said in its evening report. Especially about Bachmad Heavy fighting has been going on for days. Pro-Russian rebels had said earlier in the day that fighting was already taking place inside the city limits. The information provided by either party cannot be independently verified.

The small town is considered a cornerstone of the security system surrounding the last Ukrainian metropolitan area in the Donbass. If Bagmut and other small towns fall, the way for the Russian troops in the direction of Sloviansk and Kramadorsk will be largely free. Since seizing neighboring Luhansk, the Russians have concentrated their attacks on Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, where they have so far captured 60 percent of the territory.
