Royals move into first place with win over Guardians

Despite a lengthy rain delay at the end of the fifth inning, the Royals didn’t lose momentum in a 6-1 win over the Guardians. The win not only put them in first place, but also clinched the season series against Cleveland.

Things started fast for Kansas City. After a scoreless first period, Paul DeJong woke up the offense with a powerful shot to the opposite field. It was DeJong’s 23rd long ball of the season.

Unfortunately, the Royals suffered a major blow in the second inning. Michael Lorenzen, who had been a solid starter since arriving from Texas, was injured while covering first base on a fielder’s choice. The awkward stretch resulted in a hamstring strain and he was out of the game with two outs in the second inning. Still, Kansas City played well.

Thanks to the combination of Carlos Hernandez, James MacArthur, John Schreiber, Sam Long and Chris Stratton, the Royals were able to throw down 7 rebounds. ¹⁄₃ A round of the ball that scored one goal. Moreover, the attack continued to provide support.

After falling behind in the fifth inning, Kansas City’s bats came back into action. Facing old friend Scott Barlow, the Royals rallied and scored three runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 5-1.

Unlike Kansas City, Cleveland was unable to get a single off base when the game resumed. The Royals’ pitchers struck out all 15 batters they faced. Freddie Vermin added a home run in the eighth inning and Stratton grounded out in the ninth.

The Royals, who won 75-58, will look to make it four games tomorrow. Michael Wacha will battle Tanner Bibby. First pitch is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. CT.
