Romulus movie is off to a strong start and is poised to make $100 million at the global box office

20th Century Studios/Disney Alien: Romulus The sci-fi horror film “The Last Days” is taking over box office sales worldwide and is now expected to open to $100 million worldwide — a figure well above expectations before the weekend. This is due in particular to the strength of the Fede Alvarez-directed sci-fi horror film at the international box office, and more specifically in China.

As Anthony noted, the film is expected to make between $40 million and $42 million domestically. With the Ridley Scott-produced film having grossed $26 million overseas as of Friday, that puts the film on track to open internationally with $60 million, bringing its global total to $100 million (or so) — a great start and clear weeks ahead. It remains to be seen how much front loading there will be. Alien: Romulus But what’s happening overseas this week is that China is over-hyping expectations. Initially, hopes for a volatile, competitive market were in the single digits (perhaps $10 million). On Friday, the film debuted in second place with $6 million, then moved up to first place today. Total grosses to date are close to $15 million as of midnight local time. That suggests a $23 million weekend in China, which would put it at number one in the market.

Social and monetary scores are strong. Maoyan gives it a 9.1 vs. 10.1 vs. 10.1. Quiet Place: Day One (7.1), Space: The Covenant (6.9) and Prometheus (7.6). The Doban degree is 7.7, which is higher than AQP: Day One5.6, Space: The Covenant7.4 and Prometheus‘7.6.

elsewhere, Alien: Romulus “The Last Hope” tops the South Korean box office with $2.8 million to date, while France is close behind with $2.5 million.
