Kareem Hunt is officially on his way back to Kansas City.
The Chiefs reached an agreement with their former player Tuesday afternoon to sign him to their practice squad, according to multiple reports.
Hunt visited the Chiefs and trained with them on Tuesday morning. It’s unclear how long he will remain on the practice squad, but Hunt is likely to make his way into the starting lineup soon.
The move comes days after the Chiefs lost starter Isaiah Pacheco to a fractured right fibula. Pacheco went down late in the Chiefs’ 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday afternoon and was placed on the injured list on Monday. Pacheco is expected to miss up to two months to recover.
Hunt began his career with the Chiefs, who selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He had a stellar season in his first season, running for 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns, the most in the league, while earning a Pro Bowl nod. However, the Chiefs released him in November 2018, after a video surfaced that allegedly showed Hunt physically pushing a woman to the ground and kicking her.
Hunt was then placed on the commissioner’s exempt list, and did not play for the rest of the 2018 season. He was signed by the Cleveland Browns the following year, and Hunt returned to the field after serving an eight-game suspension.
Hunt has spent the past five seasons in Cleveland, running for 411 yards and scoring nine touchdowns last season with the team. Hunt has been a free agent so far this fall after his most recent one-year deal with the Browns expires after the 2023 season.
The Chiefs face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Until Hunt is ready to play, the team will likely turn to Carson Steele in Pacheco’s absence. Steele, now the team’s best player, recorded 24 yards on seven attempts in their win over the Bengals.
