Quarter price increase – milk shock! – Business

Prices of meat, fruit and bread have been going in the same direction for months: constantly rising!

Now the next price hammer has been announced – namely for milk and cheese. At BILD, Eckhard Heuser, executive director of the Dairy Industry Association, warns of an average 25 percent price increase. They are likely to come into effect “in the period from May to July”.

This means that a liter of milk will not soon be available in the supermarket for less than a euro. Because: At a discount, the cheapest milk pocket is currently 80 coins. With a 25 percent surcharge, there will be one before the decimal point!

Hooser warns that surcharges on fat products (e.g. cheese) could be as high as 25 percent. Currently, the discount is a minimum of 1.49 euros for a 250g cheese pack. With a 30 percent increase, prices will rise to 1.94 euros.

A packet of butter (250g) is already significantly more expensive and currently costs at least 2.09 euros. According to the Federal Bureau of Statistics, prices have risen 17.6 percent in the past twelve months.

However, after the summer price increase, it may have peaked, according to the dairy industry association.

The main drivers of the increase in energy prices

The Dairy Association told BILD that the main reason for the rise in prices was the sharp rise in energy prices. Farmers are struggling with the high cost of fertilizer and fodder as a result of the war in Ukraine.

Another price driver for farmers and dairy farms: the minimum wage (currently 9.82 euros). It will be raised to 12 euros from October 1 – and the price cycle in supermarkets could heat up further.
