Ash rain is falling southeast of Mexico City. Popocatépetl volcano is active. Residents should be prepared to evacuate.
MUNICH/MEXICO CITY – The Popocatepetl volcano has been spewing ash, steam and gas for days. In light of the increased activity, the Mexican government has now declared the second-highest alert level. This means people should prepare for evacuation. On Monday, the National Civil Defense is expected to check evacuation routes and instructions from emergency shelters.

The Disaster Management Authority also advises people in the area to stay indoors if possible. If you go outside, you should protect your mouth, nose and eyes.
Popocatépetl is located 85 kilometers southeast of Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. About 25 million people live within a 100 kilometer radius around the volcano.
The government has already closed 900 schools because of the ash rain, and flights were temporarily canceled at two airports in Mexico City on Saturday.
One of the most active volcanoes in Mexico is Popocatépetl – the last eruption was in 2013
Popocatépetl is one of the most active volcanoes in the country and has a twelve kilometer exclusion zone around it. He last spewed lava in January 2020. The last major eruption was in 2013. At that time, ash reached four districts of Mexico City.
Last year a natural phenomenon occurred in the Mexican state of Puebla that experts could not explain. A great chasm opened up. And the hole in the ground kept growing. (MO with DPA)
