PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has smashed all records for the maximum number of players on Steam, easily getting past Valve’s highly-popular MOBA Dota 2. The game reached an overwhelming 1,348,374 players on Steam in September last year, surpassing the 1,291,328-record set by DOTA 2 back in March 2016.
These numbers were revealed via Steam Charts from Polygon; hence the accuracy of these figures could be doubted. That said, it’s rather clear that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has edged past the 1 million users mark last week and these numbers are constantly rising.
It’s worth noting that even though Battlegrounds is still in development, the game has managed to edge past Valve’s free-to-play game Dota 2. While Battlegrounds is priced at $30 and is available via Steam Early Access.
Battlegrounds has also surpassed other long-standing popular titles in terms of concurrent player count on Steam, which include the likes of Fallout 4 and Grand Theft Auto V.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds creator Brendan Greene believes the game’s popularity will continue to rise. He suggests that the game has the potential to reach around 100 million users in the near future.
Greene also suggests that the game’s popularity was further aided by promotions through no traditional routes such as Twitch streamers and other content creators, who have revealed new gameplay elements ahead of the game’s public release.
“Our sales curves are just going up. They’re not slowing down. I’m still waiting for that plateau, and it’s just not happening yet. When you ask about growth on PC, I just look at League of Legends. 100 million active users a month, I think, something stupid like that? If we play our cards right, maybe we can get to that level of users,” Greene said in an interview.
Until now, Battlegrounds has sold over 10 million copies. Publisher Bluehole also plans to launch the game on the Xbox One sometime late in 2017. There are chances it might even land on other consoles, though an exact time frame remains a mystery.
In case you didn’t know, PlayerUnknown’s Battleground is a last-man standing shooter which allows upto 100 players to fight in a Battle Royale. In the beginning you start with nothing, as you’ll have to fight to find weapons, vehicle supplies, make alliances, and be the last man/team standing to win the fight.
