Russia has been cracking down on critics and members of the opposition since the start of the Ukraine war. Former Russian Prime Minister Michael Kasyanov is now considered an opposition politician – and is now openly leaving the country. Where he is is a mystery.

Former Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov has left the country. “He is currently abroad, and I do not know where he is or when he will return,” Kasyanov’s party colleague Konstantin Merslik told TASS, the state news agency. Merslick did not provide any information on the reason for the departure.

In the course of the war against Ukraine, the Russian leadership has intensified its repression of opposition members and critics in recent weeks. Kasyanov was Russia’s prime minister during the first term of President Vladimir Putin from 2000 to 2004. Shortly before the 2004 presidential election, he was fired after criticizing the arrest of Mikhail Kodarkovsky, the leader of the oligarchy and Yugoslav.

Kasyanov later tried his hand at becoming an opposition politician. He criticized Putin’s leadership style as dictatorial. In the 2008 presidential election, his candidacy, now 64, was rejected by the Election Commission on the grounds that he had forged signatures of supporters.
