Panettone King († 56) killed by lightning
Alberto Balocco (56) stood up for La Dolce Vita with his candy empire…
The life of the king of Italian panettone came to a bitter end on Saturday: he was struck by lightning with his old friend David Vigo (55). Both loved the mountains and a storm surprised them when they were on their e-bikes in the Alps.
With no shelter at 2381 meters above sea level, Balocco and Vigo had no chance of saving themselves. A motorist found their lifeless bodies between two rocks in the Susa Valley. Rescuers arrived with a helicopter, but could only determine that their old friends were dead. Printreported.
Alberto led the family business “Palocco” in the third generation. Since 1927, the Baloccos and their 500 employees have been baking biscuits and panettone, Italy’s most popular Christmas cake.
A hard blow to the family: Alberto’s father, Aldo, died two months ago at the age of 91. The elder is considered the inventor of almond panettone (“mandorlato”).
Alberto Balocco leaves behind a wife and three children. His sister is the co-owner of the family business. It is not clear whether he will be his successor. (anything)
