Japan has called for the evacuation of people living in two northern regions of the country
North Korea has fired a missile at Japan. In Japan, a missile warning system was activated and some residents were asked to go to shelters. The Coast Guard said the rocket landed in the sea.
NJapan on Tuesday warned some of its residents to go to shelters after North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile. “It looks like North Korea launched a missile. Please evacuate to buildings or basements,” the government issued a warning at 7:29 am (12:29 am CEST).
The country’s missile alert system was activated at 07:29 (00:29 CEST). The warning message was shown on the screens of state broadcaster NHK. NHK said the warning applies to the two northern regions of the country where the missile is believed to have passed.
“A missile that appears to be a North Korean missile may have passed over Japan,” the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted at around 8 a.m. local time. The Japan Coast Guard said the missile appeared to have already landed in the sea and warned ships not to approach falling objects.
It was the first time in nearly five years that a North Korean missile had flown over the Japanese archipelago. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called Tuesday’s new missile test “abhorrent.”
Japan’s Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada said that the missile flew a distance of 4,600 kilometers. This is the longest horizontal range of a North Korean missile. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said the North Korean test posed an “immediate threat” to the region and the global community.
North Korea launched a missile over Japan for the seventh time – most recently in 2017. According to Japanese reports, the missile landed in the Pacific Ocean about 3000 kilometers east of Japan.
Japan sent a formal protest through its embassy in Beijing to the North Korean embassy in the Chinese capital, Jiji news agency reported.
Most recently, North Korea test-fired two ballistic missiles on Saturday — its fourth missile launch in a week. Japan recommended taking all possible precautions, including contingency preparedness. Collect and analyze information. Security of aircraft, ships and other facilities must be guaranteed.
UN resolutions prohibit North Korea from testing any range of ballistic missiles, which, depending on the design, can also carry nuclear warheads. Experts believe North Korea’s recent missile tests are a reaction to recent naval maneuvers by South Korean and US forces. The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan also participated in the four-day naval exercise. It is the first time a US aircraft carrier has been sent to South Korea in nearly four years.
North Korea continues to accuse the US of preparing for an attack through its military maneuvers with South Korea – something both countries deny. Tensions have risen in the region following North Korea’s nuclear-capable missile tests this year. The country is reportedly preparing to launch a submarine-launched missile and conduct its first nuclear test since 2017.
