Norma Hunt, Queen of Kansas City Chiefs, dies at 85

Kansas City, Missouri – The Kansas City Chiefs mourn a member of the Hunt family.

Norma Hunt, widow of late CEO Lamar Hunt and mother of CEO/Chairman Clark Hunt, died at the age of 85 on Sunday.

Norma is the only woman to have attended all 57 Super Bowls.

“Our family is deeply saddened by the passing of our mother, Norma,” Hunt’s family said in a statement. “She was an amazing mother and an extraordinary woman who will be sorely missed by all who knew her.”

“My mother was kind, unfailingly generous and positive, she was one of a kind. Her joy and zest for life were infectious. She loved caring for others, and always had an encouraging word. She was a loyal friend and an accomplished hostess who had the rare ability to make everyone she met feel appreciated and comforted.” .

“The entire NFL family is deeply saddened by the passing of Norma Hunt, who has been a huge presence in the NFL over the past seven decades,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

“Norma’s role in football was recently highlighted in the documentary titled ‘A Lifetime of Sunday’. Norma’s place in NFL history will forever be remembered by the Chiefs organization and the entire league.”

“Our deepest condolences go out to Clarke, the entire Hunt family, and the many people whose lives she touched during her remarkable life.”

Norma was working as a teacher and hostess for the Dallas Texans when she met Lamar Hunt in 1964, five years after he and other members of “The Foolish Club” had founded the AFL. Hunt moved the Texans to Kansas City and renamed them the League Chiefs and the upstart league eventually merged with the NFL.

Lamar Hunt, who died in 2006, also coined the term “Super Bowl” for the league’s championship game.

Norma was also influential in Lamar’s co-establishment of soccer as a footprint in America as well as the rest of his sports investment portfolio.

“My mom was steadfastly devoted to her family and a huge fan of her family’s sports teams,” Hunt’s family said. “She was by our father Lamar’s side every step of the way — from the merger of the AFL and NFL to form Major League Soccer, World Series Tennis, the North American Soccer League, and their founding investment in the Chicago Bulls. She was the only person we knew who rivaled his love of sports. The two found such Happiness together, whether at home or in stands around the world.”

“Her quiet and deep faith has sustained her throughout her life, and we take great comfort in knowing she is at home with the Lord,” said Hunt’s family.

“She will be greatly missed by our family, our extended family and FC Dallas families, and everyone who knew her.”
