For the first ten weeks of the year, it was New York Giants They were dreaming of a dream season, but were subjected to a harsh reality check during Sunday’s shock loss to the United States Detroit Lions.
The big problems that dogged the Giants in 2021 finally reared their ugly heads for the first time in 2022. One of the main reasons the Giants went 4-13 last season was because the running game just wasn’t there and because Daniel Jones was a spinning machine, and that was Both problems during New York lost 31-18.
Jones went eight weeks without making an interception, but that streak finally ended Sunday when he was picked off by Aidan Hutchinson in the second quarter.
It was one of two interceptions Jones threw against the Lions. The QB Giants also threw a pick in the third quarter when a comeback was still possible.
When Hutchinson’s selection occurred, the Giants had a 6-3 lead, but that lead melted away three plays later when the Lions scored to go up 10-6. After that, Detroit will never be left behind.
Saquon Barkley and the Giants’ running game had been incredibly successful this year, so New York didn’t really have to count on Jones, but with Barkley stopping cold on almost every play—his longest was four yards—the Giants were forced to turn to Jones ( Barkley totaled just 22 yards on 15 carries against the Lions).
Although Jones’ numbers weren’t bad—he finished 27 of 44 for 341 yards and a TD—most of his production came in garbage time in the fourth quarter. The Giants haven’t had to worry about making any huge comebacks this year, but after trailing 24-6 in this game, it’s worth wondering if this offense can play from behind.
The Giants dealt with a lot of problems on Sunday — they were hit hard by injuries, had their running game shut down and received a few surprising penalties — so this loss wasn’t all down to Jones, but given that the Giants were going against one of the worst defenses In the NFL, you have to expect more from Jones and the offense as a whole.
