For the second time in a few weeks, a person has died after being bitten by a violin spider in Italy. A 23-year-old man died of septic shock and organ failure on Saturday at a hospital in Bari, southern Italy, Ansa news agency reported. Accordingly, the leg was bitten by a spider more than a month ago. In July, a 52-year-old police officer in Sicily was bitten to death by a spider of the same species.
A 23-year-old man was bitten while working as a gardener at a company, local media reported. At first he thought it was a mosquito bite, Italian radio station RAI reported. But then he experienced severe pain, and then an abscess formed on his leg, which led to necrosis of the surrounding tissue. Then went to the hospital. Hours after he was transferred to a major hospital, the young man died.
The field spider (Loxosceles rufescens) is found in the Mediterranean, Asia, and North America, according to the List of World Spiders. It is uniformly yellow-brown in color and rather small, measuring 7.5 to 9 millimeters. It gets its name from a place where its body resembles the shape of a field. The special feature is that it has only six eyes instead of eight. The field spider isn’t actually considered too keen on biting, but its venom is quite potent. It prefers dry soil, holes in the ground and is often found near houses, especially in gardens.
2 people died due to spider bites in 2015 and 2017. However, it was later revealed that the cause of death was serious previous illnesses.
