Two Russian teenagers reportedly invaded a military base in Siberia – only to later throw a Molotov cocktail at a military helicopter. Your own statements published in a video raise questions about those behind the attack.

Two Russian teenagers suspected of setting fire to a military helicopter in Siberia have been arrested. The accountability court of the city of Omsk has ordered two 16-year-old youths accused of “terrorist acts” to be placed in pre-trial detention for two months, the court’s press office reported via Telegram. Both face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

According to a report in a Telegram channel close to the authorities, the two students entered the army base on Saturday and threw a Molotov cocktail at an MI-8 helicopter. The youth said in a video posted on the online service that they were recruited for crime on Telegram. For this they were promised 18,000 euros. The client’s identity has not yet been released.

Same pattern as previous incidents?

This month, two more Russian youths, aged 13 and 14, were arrested for setting fire to a civilian helicopter in the Tyumen region of Siberia. They also said that they were recruited online with a promise of funding.

Since the Russian offensive in Ukraine began in February 2022, scores of Russians have been arrested on charges of preparing or committing acts of sabotage. Prosecutors allege that Ukraine ordered some of these attacks.
