A delay midway through the seventh inning led to a 12-minute gap between pitches and occurred when two balls were thrown from the stands in Profar’s direction. He chased one of them but the security officer got to him first. Trash was strewn on the warning track near the Padres’ bullpen.

“I feel like when the ball crossed the goal line, when they started throwing things on the field,” Tatis said. “I felt like this shouldn’t happen in a big league game.”

There was sustained booing by the crowd of 54,119 – the largest at Dodger Stadium this season.

“The bear had been poked for a while. It had been poked in previous years and decades,” Merrill said. “We finally got the firepower, and we finally got the team to take it to them. They are a good team. I like the way they play. They give us a fight every time. They don’t stop.”

Security rushed the field as Padres manager Mike Shildt and his team huddled in shallow left. The refereeing staff joined them. It appears that security was trying to identify potential perpetrators in the crowd.

“We were looking for a higher security presence in the left corner to ensure this behavior didn’t continue, and to make sure that if anyone threw anything at me they would be immediately identified and taken off the court,” crew chief Dan Bellino told a pool reporter.

The Dodgers did not immediately respond when asked if there had been any arrests.

Ohtani finished 0-for-4 with another hit. Mookie Betts was hitless for the sixth straight game.
