Matt McClain was recalled by the Reds

On Monday, the Reds called up second baseman/shortstop Matt McLean, his fifth on the club and 95th overall on the MLB Pipeline, to make his MLB debut. To make room on the active list for McLain, the team placed player TJ Friedl on the 10-day injured list, backdated to Friday, with a left oblique strain. Joey Votto was transferred to IL 60 to clear a 40-man roster.

McLain, the club’s first-round draft pick in 2021, was an all-season Triple-A star for the Louisville Bats, slashing . 348/. 474/. 710 with 12 homers in 138 at-bats. He leads both Triple-A in OPS (1.184) and leads the International League in RBIs (40) and total bases (98). He is expected to make his first game when the Reds open the series against the Rockies at Coors Field on Monday.

Besides his solid at-bat, McClain has a 60-yard rush and has stolen 37 bases in 45 attempts since the start of the 2022 season.

McLain hit 17 homers and grabbed 27 bases last year at Double-A Chattanooga, but his 28.1% batting average was a bit short. However, the 23-year-old has made great strides in that department this season as his K-rate has dropped to 19.7%. Meanwhile, McLain’s walk rate since the start of last year is a solid 15.8%.
