More than 28,000 runners hit the pavement Monday for the 126th Boston Marathon. The historic race is being held again on Patriots Day this year after the COVID-19 pandemic pushed last year’s marathon into October.

The wheelchair divisions started shortly after 9am, followed about half an hour later by the elite pitches. Eleven former champions competed.

Kenya’s Beris Jepschershire, 28, won the women’s tournament in a remarkable finish unlike in previous years. She finished with an unofficial time of 2:21:01, narrowly defeating Ababeel Yeshaneh, 30, of Ethiopia.

Evans Chibet, of Kenya, 33, won the men’s professional division with an unofficial time of 2:06:51. It’s his first time completing the Boston Marathon and this is his first major title.

Manuela Schar, 37, of Switzerland, a former Boston Marathon winner in 2017, 2019 and 2021, took the women’s wheelchair division with an unofficial time of 1:41:08.

23-year-old American Daniel Romanchuk won the men’s wheelchair division with an unofficial time of 1:26:58. He previously won the Boston Marathon in 2019.
