The trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” was pulled Wednesday because critical quotes used in it were fabricated.
Lionsgate, which is distributing the dystopian epic in the United States, told NBC News it had pulled the trailer, saying: “We made a mistake.”
The trailer included quotes from critics of Coppola’s other films that did not actually appear in their reviews of “Megalopolis.”
“Lionsgate has decided to withdraw the trailer for Megalopolis effective immediately,” a studio spokesperson told NBC News on Thursday. “We sincerely apologize to the critics involved, director Francis Ford Coppola, and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in the screening process. We made a mistake. We are sorry.”
The trailer released Wednesday included quotes from prominent film critics who sought to highlight the divisiveness of Coppola’s previous classics, apparently in an attempt to change the tone of the film’s reception after its release. The audience was divided in Cannes earlier this year.according to Variety’s report from the festival.
However, those critical lines were either misquoted or incorrect.
Owen Gleiberman was incorrectly quoted as describing Coppola’s 1992 film Bram Stoker’s Dracula as a “beautiful mess” when he reviewed the film for Entertainment Weekly, diverse It has been reported.
Variety quoted Roger Ebert as saying that “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” was “a triumph of style over substance” – when in fact he had said that in his 1989 review of “Batman”, not “Dracula.”
Pauline Kael was quoted as saying that The Godfather was “diminished by its artistry”, however, this statement was not included in her March 1972 review of the film for The New Yorker, Associated Press It has been reported.
Lionsgate has not commented on how the misquotes appeared in the trailer.
Megalopolis is scheduled to open in US theaters on September 27.
