Mafia reporter killed in Las Vegas
For years he investigated organized crime, and now he may be a victim.
Investigative reporter Jeff German († 69) was found dead of stab wounds in front of his home in the US gambling metropolis of Las Vegas on Saturday. Earlier, the journalist was reportedly involved in a heated argument with another person.
“We believe there was an altercation outside the home,” the Las Vegas Police Department said. “We have some leads and are following a suspect, but have not located him yet,” spokeswoman Tori Koren said.
For two decades, German court cases in the US state of Nevada involved politics and organized crime. In 1997, he and a colleague were the first to report on the murder of mafioso Herbert “Fat Herbie” Blitzstein in Las Vegas.
He has been writing for the review since 2010. Editor-in-chief Glenn Cook pointed out that despite his emotional writing, his reporter never raised security concerns.
“We are devastated to lose Jeff. He was one of the best in the news business. It’s hard to imagine what Las Vegas would be like if he hadn’t brought light to dark places over the years,” Cook lamented.
The case is a first for the police. The LVMPD characterized the homicide as a “major case.” This allows us to maximize the evidence to solve the case.
German wasn’t the only journalist to be shockingly murdered this weekend. Arab-Israeli journalist Nadal Izbaria (44) was shot dead in his car on Sunday evening.
This is not the first attack in Izbaria’s life. Last year, unidentified gunmen fired more than 50 bullets at the home of a reporter who last wrote for the news site Bldtna. He, his wife and daughter were not injured.
