Francis is the first Pope to be a guest at the G-7 summit. He has spoken to heads of state and government about artificial intelligence – something he already has personal experience with.

Bapst Francis is the first pontiff to attend the G-7 summit. “I’m still alive. And so are you,” the 87-year-old joked when Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed him to Puglia on Friday. “It’s going to be a long day,” Meloni replied as they boarded a golf cart that took Francis to his speech. The front led to his first bilateral meetings.

Francis spoke to heads of state and government about artificial intelligence — a topic he could also make a personal contribution to. Last year, a fake photo of the Pope wearing a thick white jacket went viral.

In his speech, Francis also sounded a warning. AI is exciting because of its possibilities, but on the other hand it inspires fear because of its dangers. “It’s up to everyone to use them wisely,” Francis said. “It is up to politicians to create the conditions under which such positive use is possible and effective.”

AI is even more complex because it enables machines to make decisions on their own. However, the final decision should always be left to the people. “If people lose the ability to make decisions about themselves and their lives, we will condemn humanity to a hopeless future.”

The Pope added: “Human dignity is at stake.” In particular, he urged politicians to ban the use of dangerous autonomous weapons. “No machine can choose whether or not to take a human life.”

In his peace message this year, the Argentine-born pope called for an international agreement to ensure that artificial intelligence is developed and used ethically. Francis argues that a technology devoid of human values such as kindness, compassion, morality and forgiveness is the most dangerous of uncontrolled growth.
