Former Steelers linebacker Andy Russell has died

Andy Russell, the Super Bowl-winning linebacker who spent his entire NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has died at the age of 82. A source told Action News 4 in Pittsburgh that Russell died Thursday night. Russell, a member of the famed Steel Curtain defense, was named team MVP in 1971. He returned to the Black and Gold in 1966 and played until his retirement at the conclusion of the 1976 season. Funeral arrangements for Russell have not been announced. A source tells Action News 4 in Pittsburgh that Russell died Thursday night.

A member of the famed Steel Curtain defense, Russell was named the team's Most Valuable Player in 1971. During his 12 years in the NFL, he made seven Pro Bowl appearances and won Super Bowls IX and X.

Russell was drafted in 1963 out of the University of Missouri, and left the Steelers after his junior year to fulfill Army ROTC obligations from his college days. He returned to the Black and Gold in 1966 and played until his retirement at the conclusion of the 1976 season.

Russell's funeral arrangements have not been announced.
