The Broncos have hired former Stanford head coach David Shaw as their chief personnel executive, the team announced Thursday.

When Shaw resigned from Stanford in 2022, he expressed his desire to return to the NFL, where he spent nearly a decade as an assistant coach.

Shaw, 51, and Broncos coach Sean Payton worked together as rookie offensive assistants with the Eagles in 1997.

Shaw also served as an assistant with the Raiders and Ravens.

Last year, Shaw was one of the candidates interviewed for the Broncos’ head coaching job for which Payton was ultimately hired.

This year he interviewed for the Chargers’ head coaching job which went to Jim Harbaugh.

Shaw is the winningest coach in Stanford history, with a 96-54 record. He was Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator in 2007 and was promoted to head coach in 2011 after Harbaugh left to coach the 49ers.

He is the only four-time Pac 12 Coach of the Year in conference history, winning three conference championships and two Rose Bowls during his tenure as coach.
