The F-16 fighter jets are seen by some as a potential game changer in the war in Ukraine. CDU leader Friedrich Merz has a clear view on this.

BERLIN – Friedrich Merz favors Kiev Ukraine war To provide additional support – including providing fighter jets. “Now it seems to me somewhat plausible to help Ukraine restore sovereignty, at least in its own airspace,” said the CDU leader at ARD.

Before the ARD summer interview with Merz, the opposition leader answered questions from the audience in the form of ARD saying “Ask yourself”. He justified his request with the current situation of the war in Ukraine. Increasing Russian missile attacks are being directed against infrastructure, electricity and water supplies, hospitals, nursing homes, and “you can’t just control them from the ground,” Merz stressed.

Merz on the Ukraine war situation: Germany should also provide fighter jets

“That is why the delivery of fighter jets to Ukraine has already been decided in many countries of the world, including in Europe. We Germans should not be left behind.

Background to his statement: The NATOStates want to accelerate Ukraine’s readiness with Western fighter jets. The US, the Netherlands and Denmark announced that the transfer of F-16 jets was already underway on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Washington.

This means fighter jets could be used to repel a Russian invasion of Ukraine this summer. The delivery includes US-made F-16 jets delivered by Denmark and the Netherlands.

Zelensky on the Ukraine war: “Olaf, thanks for the air defense”

Chancellor Olaf Scholes (SPD) pledged further aid to Ukraine at a NATO summit and described earlier support with air defense systems as a “big step”. “From my point of view, this process is incomplete,” Schalls said before the meeting with the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Selensky.

“Olaf, thanks for the air defense,” replied Zelensky. Ukraine had already requested seven additional patriotic organizations in April. Germany has already deployed three air defense systems and hopes other NATO countries will follow suit. (frs/dpa)
