It only took three games for Drake Maye to get his first snaps as an NFL player.
The New England Patriots’ rookie quarterback made his pro debut late in the fourth quarter of the team’s Week 3 loss to the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium last Thursday.
The score was already decided when May entered the game with 4:24 left and the Patriots trailing 24-3. May completed four of eight pass attempts for 22 yards. He also rushed outside the pocket several times and had 12 rushing yards. May also had five hits and was hit twice.
“I just wanted to go out there and try to make some plays and have fun,” May told reporters in the locker room, as seen on NBC Sports Boston. Patriots post game live stream“I was a little nervous running in there. It was a great night with the crowd and the atmosphere around me to be able to play my first match.”
How will May assess his limited moves?
“We can’t afford stupid sacks,” May said. “We’re trying to get the ball out, and you can’t afford sacks in that situation. At the same time, we got some first downs and moved the chains, made some footwork and hit (DeMario Douglas) up the middle. So we have some good things to look at, at the same time.”
What is May’s message to May before he goes on the pitch?
“Just be smart about football. Don’t do anything stupid,” May said. “Just walk away from the game. And at the same time, enjoy it. Try to make some moves.”
Jacoby Priest started at quarterback for the third time in as many games this season. He completed 12 of 18 pass attempts for 98 yards. Those numbers aren’t impressive, but on defense, he didn’t have time to throw the ball. The offensive line played poorly in this game. Priest was sacked five times and hit 10 times. There wasn’t much he could do.
Patriots coach Jerod Mayo was asked During his post-match press conference If he would consider changing the defensive back position in the future.
“I don’t know,” Mayo said. “We talk about it every week, we’re competing for the job. We’ll get together as a coaching staff and see where it goes.”
The Patriots have a few extra days to prepare for their Week 4 away game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 29. Despite being 0-2 at the start of Week 3, the 49ers have one of the most talented rosters in the league and an outstanding defense.
