During his appearance at the police station, Donald Trump complained about the rising crime in America. In big cities you can’t walk the streets without being shot, robbed or raped. And then the convicted former president compares himself to gangster boss Al Capone.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is continuing his counter-programme for the Democratic convention and voting in hotly contested Michigan. Appearing at a police station in the city of Howell, the 78-year-old focused on the topic of crime.

In major American cities, you can’t go down the street to buy a loaf of bread, he said. “You’re going to get shot, robbed, raped — whatever it is,” the Republican said. “We have these cities that are big cities where people are afraid to live — they’re leaving our country’s cities.”

Trump — as usual — blamed the Democrats and their presidential candidate Kamala Harris for the crime. “Kamala Harris will cause crime, chaos, destruction and death if allowed to become President of the United States,” the Republican Party warned. “I will ensure law and order, security and peace.”

In a familiar fashion, he reiterated that prisoners are sent to the United States, portraying immigrants as criminals in prisons around the world.

Trump competes with a gangster boss

“I love our country. (…) I don’t have to do that. “I shouldn’t have been impeached,” Trump continued, referring to his Nov. 5 presidential bid. “I’ve been indicted more times than the great Alphonse Capone, haven’t I?” he said, referring to notorious crime lord Al Capone (1899-1947) – which is false. Citing a Capone expert, CNN reports that the former boss of the Chicago underworld has been indicted at least six times.

Trump has been criminally indicted four times in the past year and a half – in the state of Georgia and in the US capital Washington for attempts to change the results of the 2020 presidential election, in the state of Florida for taking secret government documents and in New York City, for concealing payments. He was convicted in the trial at the end of May. This makes the former president guilty.

Trump denies all the allegations and has described the investigation as a “political witch hunt” aimed at torpedoing his election campaign. Trump said his parents would be looking down from heaven and marveling: “He’s a good boy. I don’t know what happened.”

The Democratic convention kicked off Monday in Chicago — with Harris, Trump’s political opponent, in the spotlight. Trump and his running mate, JT Vance, have chosen a different plan, touring politically hotly contested states.

Swing states are crucial to election results — it’s not clear in advance whether the Republican or Democratic candidate will win. Additional events are planned in North Carolina, Arizona, Georgia and Nevada.
