At least 21 people have been killed in a train crash in Iran. The Iranian media quoted Ali Akbar Rahimi, the governor of the eastern region of the country, as saying. It said at least 50 people were injured and more than a dozen were in critical condition. The number of victims may increase further.

According to reports, there were about 350 passengers on the train. It tracks the route between the holy pilgrimage city of Mashad and the desert city of Yast. According to initial reports, the train collided with an excavation machine near the tracks.

Five wagons derailed

Images of the Iranian news agency Isna showed wagons lying on their sides in the dust. Rescue workers rushed to the scene, about 50 kilometers (50 miles) from the desert city of Tabas. Tapas is located 550 km southeast of the capital Tehran.

Helicopters were also deployed to rescue the seriously injured. The train is said to have had several hundred passengers. Five of the seven cars jumped from the track, according to the National Aid and Rescue Organization.

State television also aired footage of the hospital where the injured were being treated. One of them said that the train suddenly braked and went slow before turning the track. Passengers “flew in the air like a ball,” he said.

In 2016, 44 people were killed in a train accident
