The situation is back under control after a large-scale attack and mass escape at Mexico’s Ciudad Juárez prison. But dozens of prisoners, including drug lord “El Neto,” are still on the run. Many are killed in pursuit of criminals.

After a major attack on a prison in Mexico, more people were killed in pursuit of the attackers. In addition to those killed in the explosion, two prosecutors and five suspects were also killed, according to officials in the northern state of Chihuahua.

An armed commando stormed a Ciudad Juárez prison on New Year’s Eve, and 25 inmates managed to escape. Among those who escaped was drug lord Ernesto Alfredo Piñon, known as “El Neto,” who was sentenced in 2010 to more than 200 years in prison for murder and kidnapping.

According to Defense Minister Luis Cresencio Sandoval, ten guards, seven prisoners and two attackers were killed. In the detention center, members of various criminal gangs and drug traffickers are kept in separate cell blocks.

A chaotic situation in the prison after the attack led to a fight among the inmates. Media reported that inmates set fire to furniture and assaulted guards. Security forces were able to bring the situation back under control only after 5 hours.

Ciudad Juárez, a city of 1.5 million people, straddles the U.S. border and has suffered for years from violence by rival drug cartels fighting to control smuggling routes into the United States. Bloody fights continue to erupt in the city prison. In 2009, 20 people were killed in a prisoner riot. Last August, three inmates were killed in a fight between rival gang members.
